AH MIDTERMS ARE COMING UP! So much HW...
I'm looking over everything right now and I've already finished up drawing over/critiquing some teams, and I'm sending them over to the team leaders so that they may distribute them out to you guys.
Good work so far, there's still some proportion/anatomy issues that I'm seeing, and some people seem to be having issues with drawing 20 different characters because we've been looking for diversity in each character design, but creativity wise you guys are knocking it out of the park. Great job!
For hw this week, we are looking for the TOP 3 character choices from your 20 sketches. Each of you worked on 2 characters of your choice, and 1 that the whole team worked on. Please pick 3 characters from your 2 choices, and finalize them with value. For the 3rd character everyone is working on, only pick 1 from each of your sketches and finalize it please. So you are ALL DOING A TOTAL OF 7 FINALIZED VALUE DRAWINGS. 3+3+1 make sense? Pick 3 designs from your sketches that you find to be the best, and we want you to finalize them with values. By finalize, I mean we want them to be clean, ready to color, but with gray, black and white to indicate where what color will be. We're expecting very clean work time! Laying in values helps to figure out where you want darker colors, lighter colors, and so forth on your characters. It'll teach you examples such as: what do I want out of my character that POPS out, what do I want to be more subtle, and not stand out as much?
Now that you're finalizing, please don't just copy poses you see in the games, actually look up anatomy references, see how things work, and how your character can pull off their moves. In their line-ups, they don't have to be doing insane tricks/moves, what is their default/normal pose before they start fighting? We'll be seeing the moves on the move sheets, so give your characters a break from all the action. Cool poses are fine though and give off great personality!
The 3 characters you dwindle down to should each be different, and show variety. I don't want to see 3 characters in the lineup that look exactly the same that is a failing grade. I saw a lot of great variations of characters in the sketches this week so most of you won't have any problems picking your 3 characters. Some of you however lacked a good variety, so I'm hoping you guys get on that. They don't have to have insane major differences, but show us some exploration, show us your flexibility.
Other than your final value characters, please make a clear move set of at least 3 moves your characters can do. Don't just show us jumps and random kicks, how does it start? How does the move begin and end? We want to see this step-by-step progress! Please make these clean and clear as well, and put text in if you need to explain it more power to you! Also, name your moves! Gives them more life/personality!
On how finished/polished we want it, this is the level of work we are expecting! Are you guys painters, or more towards line work? Anyway of drawing is fine, but we want them to at least be up to this level by next week.
REMEMBER, 7 OF THESE! Good clear values, good sense of anatomy! Does it have to be realistic? NO! Remember, you can draw in any STYLE you'd like that's the great part about this assignment. However, please do not use style as an excuse for horrible anatomy/proportions, catch my drift? Street Fighter itself is a pretty stylized game despite it's somewhat realistic prorportions you know?
So again, here is a list of things to do by next week:
- 3 Finalized VALUE DRAWINGS from each character you've designed except for the one you and your team all worked on together. Only pull 1 design from that one. Please don't just blatantly pull a drawing from your sketches and color it. Change it up a bit please! We want them to be very clear! Please line up the final designs of the one you've ALL BEEN WORKING ON TOGETHER so we may see the different designs for the theme.
- Move set of your characters, so we should see 3 moves per character! Show the step by step process of how the move works! Name your moves, they can be as silly or dumb as hell as long as it works!
EXAMPLE OF MOVESET
Look at the movements, and how the attacks start and end. How does their attack work? The first gif is a great example. Draw out the step by step process of your moves.
That's actually it this week! It's not too much, but the polishing and completion of the value drawings might take up some time because we want them finalized. No color yet, just value indications. Clear, value indications don't just blatantly add values anywhere for no reason.
If the hw is still confusing, just give me a few minutes I might post up some more examples for you guys. Or just ask me again, dunesandd@yahoo.com.
Keep on trucking guys, you're all doing great. Can't wait to see the finalized value drawings next week, talk amongst your teammates, see what designs work and what don't, and get this sucker completed for next week. Think of this as your pre-midterm? Or is it your midterm hmmm. Either way, you wanna do real well for this one! Good luck!
