This week's hw is fairly simple, you guys all presented your projects and character ideas and we gave you critiques on it. Some of you guys didn't exactly have finalized designs, so if you're one of those individuals, be sure to have a strong idea/overall reoccurring theme before you move on to anything else. If you're still having trouble email at dunesandd@yahoo.com or find me around school working in the labs.
The to-do list this time:
- Important thing to note: None of your characters should look EXACTLY the same as they did last week unless Hong and I stated they were 100% accurate. I considerably doubt anybody's was, you guys were still in the stages of figuring things out. There were still minor changes here and there you guys have to make for your characters, be sure to fix them up and then apply color onto them! There's no sense in giving your characters color if their theme or idea does not resonate/isn't strong enough.
- Do FIVE color variations of each character. Then, pick the one you think is best and make it bigger like you did for the values. Is color confusing to you? GOOD! This week is for us to see you guys experiment and show us what you currently know about color. You'll be learning color next time so it's ok if you don't know diddly, just show us what you know. Take into consideration before you color: Why did I choose these specific colors? Do my characters stand out? Do they not? What parts are accented/highlighted on my characters and if so, why?
- Another interesting thing to note is presentation. We don't particularly enforce it in class because we want you guys to be in a chill work environment, but there's no point in doing rad templates, rad art and then destroying all of that hard work with weak presentation skills. Some things to note: Is my voice clear/loud enough? Can everyone hear me? Don't explain to us every tidbit about your characters and their life stories, your art should present that to us visibly and clearly. As artists, visual communication is your key. If you told us oh my character is a nun but has NO signs of being a nun, uh???? We don't really want to know. What's showing up there on the projector? What's currently being asked of you?Make it short and simple; don't drag out presentations and repeat yourself. Another particular thing about dragging presentations out is since this is such a large class, the more you drag out, the less time you have for lessons/individual critique time with Hong and me. Also, I encourage folks to stay after class, it's very beneficial!
That's it for now, see you all next week!
