A reminder that this week's HW is to either redo the same movie/style you chose, or to choose an entirely new style and draw 10 different variations of each character again. (Three characters minimum but you are welcome to do MORE!) We'd prefer if you guys stuck with the same MOVIES and change cartoon styles, but if you don't like the movie you chose this week, you're welcome to change it. It's only recommended to change styles if you guys felt like you really aced the style you chose this week. If you feel as though you were lacking something and there are changes to be made however, stick with what you chose this week and fix your mistakes.
Remember to please PLEASE put your name on everything you've done! Please gather reference again like you did last week and organize it and also do some study sketches from the show you will be copying! Organize your sketches and be tidy! Not entirely spick and span, but don't show up with a jumble of things mashed together or drawings that are too light to be seen when projected onto the screen. Presentation is very important, and none of you would be sloppy at a job interview/presentation would you? Title wise again just put your name, week number, and what assignment you've done. Be sure to put an underscore in between all of these! Ex: (SoJeong_Week01_Hellboy/SamuraiJack)
Here are the slides and Style Guide that Hong showed you all this week. We have the Design Wheel and Style Guide/Chart so take a look at those.
Also if you guys are still having a bit of trouble, here some examples of DO's and DON'TS.
Remember that this assignment is about pushing your style and helping you to experiment and learn about SHAPE DESIGN as well! Looking at the chart above, I'd say staying between the 10% and 20% cartoons are preferred.
Here are a list of some good cartoons that have interesting styles that play around with shape design along with various other things from texture, lines, and form.
Again these are just a FEW good cartoons that have a good range of different character styles and shapes you can play around with! There are so many more out there go explore! However just because the these cartoons have great stylization doesn't mean it isn't challenging though. Before you pick a style/movie and start drawing, think about your choices! Does this style have enough of a variety of characters that will help me pump out individual character designs that all look different from one another? Is the show even a good match for my life action movie? A good example would be let's say you picked a movie that has sheerly human characters and you choose the style Spongebob Squarepants. The style has a great range of different character shapes and such to choose from, but there are literally no 2D humans in the show itself, so that would be extremely difficult to do.
I think this is a pretty obvious list of what not to do for this assignment. Don't get me wrong most of these are fantastic shows and have great styles, but they're extremely poor choices when looking for a variety of different looking characters. The reason as to why I also picked these as don'ts is because literally everyone in the show looks exactly the same other than minor differences from hair styles, eyes, etc etc. If you chose Sailor Moon and let's say the movie Forest Gump you'd probably draw ten designs that look exactly the same with no variations whatsoever discluding a few minor changes in facial features, hair, etc. Again, that's just because of how the style is! There's literally only one look for a basic female and male in that show and for a lot of the other shows on here. Some also show too much form and human anatomy and don't exactly play with a lot of shape variation. We know you guys are awesome artists and you understand the human form, so show us how you can bend and stylize it to work!
If you guys are looking for some inspiration also, here are a list of the artists that Hong mentioned in class today. Don't use these artist's styles for the assignment they're just here for you to see and understand different styles and maybe they'll possibly influence you for future projects and your own individual styles? You're welcome to simply look them up and soak in all of their gorgeous art to help get your creative juices going for future references, but if you want some of their work shown to you in class today, email me at dunesandd@yahoo.com and I'd be happy to send them along your way. (Or hell if you see me at school stop me and I'll give them to yah!)
